** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Musconetcong’s water temperatures change substantially through the year because it is a relatively shallow, temperate lake influenced by air temperature, spring runoff and river inflow. Typical seasonal surface ranges are roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C) in winter when ice or near‑ice conditions can occur; in spring temperatures usually climb from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as snowmelt and rains warm the water; summer surface readings commonly sit between about 68–80°F (20–27°C) on warm, sunny days though deeper or shaded spots remain cooler; and autumn brings cooling to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures fall and the lake mixes. Local factors such as depth, shading, wind and inflow from the Musconetcong River can create colder pockets and thermal layering during calm periods.
Swimming at Lake Musconetcong is possible in warm months in areas where local rules and property ownership permit it, but it is not uniformly a supervised public beach. Some shorelines are private, and certain parts of the lake may be subject to restrictions because of water quality considerations, underwater hazards, aquatic vegetation and safety (no lifeguards), or watershed protection if sections serve municipal needs. Visitors should follow posted signs and municipal guidance, and treat summer water as comfortable for swimming while recognizing cooler temperatures and risks in spring and fall.
