*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Orchard Lake in Minnesota follows the typical thermal pattern of small inland lakes in the region. After ice-out in spring, surface temperatures typically climb from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the water mixes and warms. By midsummer, sheltered and shallow areas often reach 65–75°F (18–24°C) and on hot, calm days can approach 75–80°F (24–27°C); deeper basins remain cooler. In autumn the surface cools back through the 50–60°F (10–16°C) range, and by winter the lake is usually ice-covered with near-surface temperatures close to freezing, about 32–39°F (0–4°C) beneath the ice.
Swimming is commonly pursued in the warm, ice‑free months when surface temperatures are comfortable, and public or private access permits entry; municipal or custodial rules and seasonal water‑quality advisories can affect whether a particular shoreline is open. Cold water carries risks: prolonged exposure below about 60°F (15–16°C) can cause cold shock and loss of dexterity, and temperatures under roughly 50°F (10°C) raise hypothermia concerns. Winter ice-open swimming is not recommended except for experienced cold‑water swimmers using proper safety protocols. As with any freshwater site, swimmers should consider recent weather, observed water conditions, and local guidance before entering.
