*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lower Prior Lake’s water temperature follows the typical seasonal pattern for shallow lakes in southern Minnesota. In spring (April–May) surface temperatures usually rise from around 40–65°F (4–18°C) as ice melts and the sun warms the water. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest conditions, with surface readings commonly between 70–80°F (21–27°C) and occasional highs into the mid‑80s°F (around 29°C) during heat waves. By fall (September–November) temperatures decline to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) as cooling air temperatures and turnover begin. In winter the lake is often ice‑covered and surface water sits at freezing or just above; water below the ice tends toward the density maximum near 39°F (4°C).
Swimming at Lower Prior Lake is permitted during the ice‑free season where public access or designated beaches exist, provided local rules and water‑quality advisories allow it. Summer surface temperatures in the low 70s to 80s°F (about 21–27°C) are comfortable for recreational swimming, whereas cooler spring and fall conditions can make long exposure uncomfortable or risky. Swimming is unsafe in winter when ice and very cold water pose drowning and hypothermia hazards. As with any lake, brief algal blooms, recent heavy runoff, or posted advisories can temporarily restrict swimming for health reasons, so checking current local guidance is recommended before entering the water.
