Mellan-Fryken, the middle of the three Fryken lakes in Värmland County, experiences a clear seasonal pattern in surface water temperature. In spring the water gradually warms from near freezing after ice break-up, commonly ranging from about 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) as air temperatures rise. Peak summer surface temperatures in June to August typically reach roughly 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in warm years, though cooler conditions are not uncommon. During autumn the lake cools back down to around 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), and in winter the surface often sits close to 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) with parts of the lake frequently ice-covered.
Swimming in Mellan-Fryken is generally allowed and practiced during the warmer months because public access to shoreline and bathing areas is common in Sweden and local water quality is usually suitable for bathing. Municipal beaches and informal spots attract swimmers in summer, but conditions vary by season and weather. Cold-water shock in early spring and late autumn and thin ice in winter make swimming hazardous outside the warm season.
