Urlaur Lough, located near Kilmovee in County Mayo, is a peaceful freshwater lake surrounded by farmland and small patches of woodland. Its water temperature follows the pattern typical of western Ireland’s inland lakes, remaining cool for most of the year. In winter, surface temperatures generally range between 4–6°C (39–43°F), while in summer they rise to about 15–18°C (59–64°F). On calm, sunny days, sheltered areas along the shore may briefly reach 19°C (66°F), though the deeper sections remain noticeably cooler. Because of the lake’s moderate depth and exposure to breezes from the Atlantic, the best time for swimming is during late June through early September, when both air and water are most comfortable.
Swimming is allowed in Urlaur Lough, and its clean, calm waters make it suitable for short swims or open-water dips on warm days. As the lake is not a formal bathing site, swimmers should take care to enter from safe, shallow spots and avoid sudden drops or slippery banks.
