*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Carra in County Mayo is one of Europe's finest examples of a marl lake, famed for its exceptionally clear, pale green-blue water resulting from the rich, chalky sediment on its bed. Like most Irish loughs, the water temperature remains relatively cool throughout the year. While detailed, official data is scarce, seasonal ranges typically fluctuate from a bracing winter low of about 4∘C to 7∘C (39∘F to 45∘F), peaking in summer with an average surface temperature of approximately 15∘C to 18∘C (59∘F to 64∘F).
Swimming is generally permitted in the lake as it is a natural body of water and not a reservoir, and it has historically been a popular wild swimming spot, particularly around the Moore Hall area. However, bathers should exercise extreme caution, as the lake is known for unstable marl sediment and sudden sinkholes in certain shallow areas, which can pose a real danger. For visitors exploring the area, the stark, beautiful ruins of Moore Hall on the northern shore and the historic Ballintubber Abbey nearby are popular attractions, alongside the excellent trout fishing opportunities on the lough itself.
