** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Melvin is a beautiful, large freshwater lake that famously straddles the border between County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and County Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland. As a large inland lough, its water temperatures fluctuate significantly with the seasons. In the coldest months of winter, the temperature will typically drop to around 4∘C to 7∘C (39∘F to 45∘F), while in the height of summer, the surface layer can warm up to a much more accessible 15∘C to 18∘C (59∘F to 64∘F).
Unlike some of the protected drinking water reservoirs nearby, swimming is generally permitted in Lough Melvin and is a popular wild swimming location, particularly near public access points like the park in Garrison. While the lake is often deemed safe for swimming during the summer due to its shallow areas, users are advised to be mindful of cold water shock, particularly outside of peak summer. The lough is internationally famous for its unique species of salmonids, and the surrounding area offers other attractions such as the historic Belleek Pottery and the majestic underground world of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark.
