Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lower Lough Erne, one of the largest lakes in Northern Ireland, stretches across much of County Fermanagh and is known for its open waters, islands, and scenic shorelines. Because of its size and depth, the lake stays cool year-round, with winter temperatures often between 4–6 °C (39–43 °F). In spring, the water gradually warms, reaching 10–12 °C (50–54 °F) by late May. During the summer, particularly in July and August, surface temperatures can rise to about 15–18 °C (59–64 °F), though deeper areas remain noticeably colder. By autumn, the cooling trend returns, with the water dropping to around 9–11 °C (48–52 °F) before winter sets in again.
Swimming is allowed in Lower Lough Erne, and several designated areas make it accessible to both locals and visitors. However, due to the lake’s cool temperatures, large size, and occasional strong currents, swimmers are advised to stay close to the shore or use supervised zones. Wetsuits are commonly worn outside of midsummer. Beyond swimming, the lake offers opportunities for boating, kayaking, and fishing, and its shores are lined with scenic picnic spots and forest parks. Nearby attractions include the historic town of Enniskillen, Devenish Island with its ancient monastic ruins, and Castle Archdale Country Park, making the area a highlight of Fermanagh’s natural beauty.
