*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lough Gara, a picturesque lake nestled mostly in County Sligo with a portion extending into Roscommon, is known for its shallow waters and numerous archaeological Crannógs (ancient artificial islands). As a freshwater lough in the Irish midlands, the water temperature experiences significant seasonal variation. In the coldest months, the water typically ranges from 5∘C to 8∘C (41∘F to 46∘F), while the summer sun can warm the surface layer to a more comfortable 15∘C to 18∘C (59∘F to 64∘F).
Swimming is generally allowed in Lough Gara, as no formal restrictions prohibit it, making it a popular spot for wild swimming enthusiasts. However, there are no designated, lifeguarded bathing areas, and swimmers should be cautious of the dense reeds and vegetation common to the shallow lake margins. The lake itself is a key fishing location, particularly for pike, and the surrounding area offers various other attractions. Close by, visitors can enjoy the activities at the Lough Gara Country Pursuits centre or take a short drive to the historic Boyle Abbey or Lough Key Forest and Activity Park.
