*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Lough Inagh, set dramatically between the Twelve Bens and Maumturk mountain ranges in Connemara, is a long, deep, and relatively remote freshwater lake. Due to its mountain-fed water source and depth, the temperature remains quite cold throughout the year. In winter, the water is consistently chilly, likely around 6∘C to 9∘C (43∘F to 48∘F). In the warmest part of summer, one can expect the surface temperature to peak between 12∘C and 15∘C (54∘F to 59∘F), making it a truly invigorating experience.

Swimming is permitted and is a popular wild swimming location, often used by those who have been hiking the surrounding mountains for a refreshing cool-down. The water is noted for its dark, peaty colour and is generally safe, but swimmers should proceed with caution due to the depth, the remote location, and the potential presence of submerged rocks and reeds near the shore. The area is a hub for nature enthusiasts, with the iconic Kylemore Abbey and its Victorian Walled Garden, Connemara National Park, and the scenic Killary Fjord all located nearby.
