Lough Conn, in County Mayo in western Ireland, is one of the country’s most picturesque freshwater lakes, surrounded by low hills and quiet villages. Its water temperature stays cool for much of the year, typically around 4–6°C (39–43°F) in winter and rising to about 14–17°C (57–63°F) in July and August. During unusually warm spells, shallow areas near the shore may reach 18°C (64°F), but the deeper waters remain brisk. The lake’s clear, open surface and exposure to Atlantic winds mean the water rarely feels warm, so most people choose to swim only during midsummer, when both air and water temperatures are at their mildest.
Swimming is permitted in Lough Conn, but it is generally recommended only for experienced swimmers or those using wetsuits, as the lake can be deep and cold with unpredictable currents.
