*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Killary Fjord, located on the border between Counties Galway and Mayo, is Ireland’s only true fjord and extends about 16 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Because it is a sea inlet rather than a freshwater lake, its water temperature is influenced by ocean currents and weather patterns. In winter, temperatures usually stay around 8–10°C (46–50°F), while in summer they rise to about 14–17°C (57–63°F). Sheltered coves may occasionally reach 18°C (64°F) during warm spells, but the water remains brisk overall. The fjord’s depth and connection to the Atlantic keep it consistently cool and very clear, creating ideal conditions for marine life and aquaculture.
Swimming is permitted in Killary Fjord, and its calm surface on mild summer days attracts open-water swimmers seeking a challenge. However, the water is saltier and colder than most inland lakes, so wetsuits are recommended for longer swims. The fjord is also used for kayaking, sailing, and diving, with local adventure centers offering guided water activities. The surrounding scenery is dramatic, framed by the mountains of Mweelrea and the Twelve Bens. Nearby, the village of Leenane provides visitor facilities and walking trails, while the fjord’s changing tides and reflections make it one of Ireland’s most striking coastal landscapes.
