The Litton Reservoirs in Somerset are relatively small, open water bodies and their temperatures follow typical temperate patterns. In summer the surface can warm to roughly 15–20°C (59–68°F) on warm days, while spring and autumn generally see temperatures around 8–14°C (46–57°F). In winter the water cools substantially and often lies between about 3–6°C (37–43°F), with occasional colder spells bringing it lower. Conditions vary with depth, weather and river inflow, so temperatures can change quickly and cold layers may persist even in warmer months.
Swimming at Litton is not formally managed as a public bathing area, and owners and local authorities typically discourage unsupervised swimming because reservoirs can be used for water supply and present hazards such as sudden depth changes, submerged obstacles and cold-water shock. Despite this, some experienced wild swimmers do visit at their own risk. The area remains attractive for walkers and birdwatchers, with the nearby Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge and local villages offering additional outdoor activities and sights.
