Llandegfedd Reservoir, a vast body of water set in the beautiful Usk Valley, offers controlled open water swimming, but with strict safety guidelines, as unauthorized swimming in this Welsh Water site is prohibited due to hidden dangers like machinery and strong currents. Swimming is only permitted during designated, lifeguard-assisted sessions in a strictly defined area. The water temperature fluctuates seasonally; in winter, the lake can be very cold, occasionally dipping to around 7∘C (45∘F), while in the summer, certain sessions run when the temperature reaches 18∘C (64∘F) or warmer.
The reservoir’s visitor centre acts as a hub for various activities beyond swimming. It offers other water sports like windsurfing, sailing, and paddleboarding, with equipment available for hire. On land, visitors can explore the many walking trails around the lake, try their hand at fishing for rainbow and brown trout, or enjoy panoramic views from the lakeside cafe. The area is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest for its important wildlife and overwintering bird populations.
