** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

#Somerset

The Barrow Gurney Tanks are a group of working reservoirs just outside Bristol. Water temperatures vary with the seasons: in winter they commonly sit around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), spring temperatures typically rise to 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), summer highs can reach roughly 12–20 °C (54–68 °F), and autumn generally cools to about 8–14 °C (46–57 °F). Because the tanks are deep, managed water supply reservoirs, they tend to remain considerably cooler than shallow lakes and can present sudden cold layers. Swimming is generally not permitted—both for legal and safety reasons—because the sites are owned and operated as drinking water infrastructure, with risks from steep banks, underwater obstructions, poor visibility and potential contamination.

Although formal bathing is discouraged, the area offers plenty for visitors who prefer dry-land activities. Nearby Chew Valley Lake and Blagdon Lake are popular for birdwatching and walking, Tyntesfield provides a large National Trust estate to explore, and Ashton Court and Leigh Woods offer woodland trails; Bristol city centre is also within easy reach for cultural attractions and amenities.
