** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Somerset
Chew Valley Lake in Somerset is a large reservoir with water temperatures that vary noticeably through the year. In winter surface temperatures typically sit around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F), rising in spring to roughly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Summer can warm the shallows to about 15–22 °C (59–72 °F) on warmer spells, while autumn sees cooling back to around 8–14 °C (46–57 °F). These figures are approximate and conditions change with air temperature, wind and depth; deeper areas remain significantly cooler than the surface.
Swimming in the lake is generally not permitted; the site is a working reservoir supplying water and is managed to protect water quality, wildlife and visitor safety. Steep banks, underwater hazards and boat activity add to the risks, so organised bathing is discouraged and signage advises against wild swimming. Visitors instead enjoy birdwatching, nature trails, cycling and picnicking around the reserve, and nearby attractions include the villages of Chew Magna and Chew Stoke, the Mendip Hills and other Somerset countryside suited to walking and photography.
