* Current - Actual water temperature value

** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Lake Van (Turkish: Van Gölü) is a large, high-altitude soda lake in eastern Turkey whose water temperatures vary markedly by season. During winter months (December–February) surface temperatures are low, roughly 0–6 °C (32–43 °F), making bathing impractical for most people. In spring (March–May) the lake warms to about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). The warmest period is summer (June–August), when surface temperatures typically reach 18–25 °C (64–77 °F), and into early autumn (September–November) temperatures generally fall to around 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Altitude and local winds mean temperatures can vary locally and change quickly from day to day.

Swimming is generally allowed and is a seasonal activity around Van’s public beaches and resort spots, primarily during summer when surface temperatures are comfortable for bathing. The lake’s water is alkaline and mineral-rich (“soda lake”), so swimmers may notice eye or skin irritation and should avoid ingesting the water; people with sensitive skin should take precautions. Strong winds and waves can create choppy conditions, and organized lifeguard services are limited, so safety awareness is important. In short, recreational swimming is possible and common in summer, but less practical or advisable in colder months and for those sensitive to the lake’s chemistry.
