** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Tatvan sits on the western shore of Lake Van in Bitlis province, beside one of Turkey’s largest high-altitude soda lakes. Surface water temperatures at Tatvan fluctuate markedly with the seasons. In winter the lake surface commonly falls to around 1–4 °C (34–39 °F), while spring brings a gradual rise into roughly 5–12 °C (41–54 °F). Summer months are the warmest, with typical surface temperatures near Tatvan in the vicinity of 18–25 °C (64–77 °F) on calmer days, and autumn sees cooling back to about 10–15 °C (50–59 °F). Local conditions such as wind, depth and bay exposure can cause short-term variations from these averages.
Swimming is generally possible and is a common recreational activity in the warmer months, mainly from late June through early September when temperatures are most comfortable. The lake’s alkaline, mineral-rich water has different buoyancy and can irritate eyes and sensitive skin, so people often take basic precautions. There are limited organized lifeguard services and facilities in many spots around Tatvan, so swimmers should be cautious about sudden weather changes, cold deep water and variable currents. While municipal regulations rarely prohibit bathing outright in summer, responsible local guidance and attention to conditions are advised.
