Location & Local Information
While Lake Tohmajärvi shares its name with a municipality in North Karelia, the location of a lake named Tohmajärvi in the Kainuu region is less documented but exhibits typical northern Finnish lake characteristics. Swimming is generally permitted along its shores throughout the open-water season, thanks to Everyman’s Rights, which legally guarantee public access to lakes for recreational use, provided that respect for privacy and environmental protection is maintained. As with all Finnish lakes, the excellent water quality makes it a safe and refreshing place to swim during the brief summer months.
The water temperature of Tohmajärvi is highly seasonal due to its northern position. The lake is typically frozen for a long period, generally from November to April, during which time the water under the ice remains at a cold 0∘C to 4∘C. The optimal period for comfortable swimming is brief, mostly limited to July and early August. During this summer peak, the surface temperature generally warms up to range between 16∘C and 21∘C. Outside of this narrow summer window, the water is too cold for casual swimmers, appealing only to those practicing cold-water endurance or seeking a brisk post-sauna dip.
