** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Gogebic, the largest inland lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, tends to run cool through much of the year. Spring surface temperatures typically climb from roughly 35–55°F (2–13°C) as ice melts into late April and May. By early summer (June) water usually sits in the mid-50s to low 60s°F (13–17°C), with peak summer (July–August) surface readings often reaching about 65–75°F (18–24°C) in shallower bays and on warm sunny stretches. In fall the lake cools back into the 45–60°F (7–16°C) range, and by late fall and winter the surface falls to freezing and below—ice cover is common and under-ice water temperatures approach roughly 32–34°F (0–1°C).
Swimming is permitted during open-water months and people do use public beaches, campgrounds and private shorelines when temperatures are favorable, but conditions are distinctly cooler than more southerly lakes. The relatively low summer highs and rapid cooling in spring and fall mean swims can be bracing; hypothermia is a real risk in cold water and after long exposure. There are also times when ice or unsafe weather makes swimming impossible. Visitors should check local conditions, choose sheltered, warmer coves for brief swims, and observe posted guidance and safety practices rather than assuming prolonged comfortable swimming is available.
