*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lac Vieux Desert, a northern Michigan lake, shows the typical seasonal swings in surface water temperature seen in small to mid‑sized lakes. In spring the surface often ranges from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and the water mixes, rising into the 60s°F (15–21°C) by early summer. Peak summer afternoons commonly reach roughly 68–82°F (20–28°C) in sheltered shallows on warm years, while deeper or wind‑exposed areas stay noticeably cooler. By autumn the surface cools back through the 50s–60s°F (10–18°C) and can drop toward freezing, about 32–45°F (0–7°C), as ice begins to form. Winter temperatures are at or below 32°F (0°C) under ice cover, with most of the lake frozen through much of the colder months.
Swimming is generally allowed on Lac Vieux Desert during the open water season where shorelines are publicly accessible or private owners permit it, and it is a common recreational activity in summer when surface temperatures are most comfortable. Swimming is impractical and unsafe in winter when the lake is iced; even in shoulder seasons cooler water increases hypothermia risk, so caution is advised. Local boat launches, beaches, and township postings often indicate where swimming is appropriate, and water‑quality advisories (for example, algal blooms) or private property rules can temporarily restrict access.
