Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Catherine, located near Hot Springs in west-central Arkansas, is a scenic reservoir on the Ouachita River known for its clear water and forested shoreline. The water temperature in Lake Catherine changes with the seasons, influenced by both the river’s flow and nearby hydroelectric operations. During winter, surface temperatures typically range from 7–10 °C (45–50 °F), making the water too cold for swimming. In spring, the lake gradually warms to about 15–21 °C (59–70 °F). By midsummer, the surface water reaches its warmest levels, averaging 25–29 °C (77–84 °F), while deeper areas stay significantly cooler. In autumn, the lake begins to cool again, dropping to around 15–20 °C (59–68 °F) before winter returns.
Swimming in Lake Catherine is officially permitted and very popular during the warmest months, from late May through early September. Designated swimming areas, such as those at Lake Catherine State Park, provide safe, well-maintained beaches with access to clear, refreshing water. The lake’s moderate size and natural surroundings create a relaxing environment for families and visitors seeking a summer retreat. Outside of the summer season, swimming becomes uncomfortable due to the cooler water and variable river flow, though Lake Catherine remains a favorite destination for fishing, boating, and hiking year-round.
