*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Oulujärvi, located in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland, is the country’s fifth-largest lake and is often called “the sea of Kainuu” because of its vast open waters. Its size and depth cause the water temperature to change slowly throughout the year. In spring, after the ice melts, the surface temperature is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). By early summer, it rises to 14–17 °C (57–63 °F), and in July, during the warmest weeks, the surface water typically reaches 18–21 °C (64–70 °F). In calm, shallow bays the temperature can briefly rise to 22–23 °C (72–73 °F). In autumn, the lake cools below 10 °C (50 °F) and begins to freeze in late November or early December.
Swimming in Lake Oulujärvi is allowed and widely enjoyed, particularly near Vaala and Paltaniemi, where long sandy beaches make access easy. The water is clean, and the open landscape gives the feeling of swimming by the sea. Despite the northern location, the lake warms to comfortable temperatures in July and August, making it suitable for open-water swimming and family recreation. Its clear water and calm bays provide ideal conditions for swimming, sailing, and enjoying nature during the short but pleasant Finnish summer.
