Fountain Lake, like many small lakes in Minnesota, experiences a wide seasonal swing in surface water temperature. In winter the lake is typically at or below freezing at the surface and commonly ice-covered, with surface temperatures around 32°F (0°C) or colder in open leads. Spring brings a slow warming, with surface waters commonly in the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (2–13°C) as the lake mixes. By summer the sun and longer days warm the upper layer, and surface temperatures often reach the low 70s to upper 70s °F (21–26°C), occasionally higher in shallow bays; deeper water remains noticeably cooler. In autumn the surface cools through the 40s to 60s °F (4–16°C) as the lake destratifies.
