** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
German Lake in Minnesota follows the typical seasonal pattern for small inland lakes in the region. Surface temperatures in winter are at or just below freezing (32°F / 0°C) under ice cover. In spring the lake usually warms from roughly 35–55°F (2–13°C) as ice retreats and air temperatures rise. By early to mid-summer surface readings commonly reach about 65–75°F (18–24°C), with warmer, shallow areas occasionally warming into the high 70s or low 80s °F (25–28°C) during hot, calm spells. As autumn arrives the surface cools back through the 50s °F (10–15°C) range toward freezing. Actual readings at any time depend on depth, recent weather, wind and sunlight, so different parts of the lake can be noticeably warmer or cooler.
Swimming is generally possible and commonly done during the warmer months when surface temperatures are comfortable, but whether swimming is allowed depends on local access and posted advisories. If German Lake has public access, recreational swimming is typically permitted unless health or safety notices (such as harmful algal blooms, elevated bacteria, or ice conditions) are posted. There may be no lifeguards or facilities, so swimmers should watch for cold-water shock in shoulder seasons, avoid areas with dense vegetation or poor clarity, and respect private property or specific local regulations that could restrict swimming.
