** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast

Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.

Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Fall Lake in northern Minnesota follows the familiar seasonal cycle of smaller, forested lakes in the region. Surface temperatures typically rise into the upper 60s to upper 70s °F (about 20–26 °C) in mid to late summer, with shallow bays sometimes warming a few degrees higher. In spring, as ice melts, surface temperatures often sit between roughly 40–60 °F (4–15 °C), and in early fall they decline into the 45–65 °F range (7–18 °C) as cooling begins. During winter the lake freezes and water just beneath the ice stays close to 32–39 °F (0–4 °C); deeper layers remain colder year-round and can be several degrees cooler than the surface in stratified months.

Swimming is generally possible and commonly done in the warm summer months when surface temperatures are most comfortable; public access points and private shorelines provide places to enter the water. However, swimming outside the warm season is not advisable because cold water increases the risk of hypothermia and waves or wind can make conditions hazardous. Local rules, posted signs, water quality advisories and the presence or absence of lifeguards should be checked before entering the water, and users should take standard safety precautions such as wearing life jackets where appropriate.
