** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Shagawa Lake in northeastern Minnesota typically experiences cold water for much of the year, with surface temperatures changing seasonally. In spring (April–May) the lake often runs cool, roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and cooler air keep the water chilly. Summer (June–August) brings the warmest surface conditions, commonly ranging from about 65–75°F (18–24°C) on average and occasionally reaching the upper 70s°F (around 25–26°C) during heat waves. In early fall (September–October) temperatures decline back toward roughly 45–60°F (7–16°C). Through winter the lake is usually ice-covered and surface water is at or just above freezing, near 32–35°F (0–2°C) under the ice.
Swimming is generally possible in the ice‑free months when the surface water warms, and people often swim from shorelines, docks, and lakeside properties in summer. Public access points and boat landings provide entry for recreation, but conditions can vary and there are usually no lifeguards, so swimmers should be cautious. Cold spring and fall water increases the risk of cold shock and hypothermia, and winter ice makes open‑water swimming unsafe except in regulated, controlled events. Local advisories, weather and ice conditions should be checked before entering the water.
