*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Elbow Lake in Minnesota follows the general pattern of small inland lakes in the region: water is cold in spring, warms in summer, cools again in fall, and freezes in winter. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range from about 40–60°F (4–15°C) during spring thaw, rising to a more comfortable 68–78°F (20–26°C) in midsummer on warm, sunny days. In many years the upper few feet of water will warm notably while deeper sections remain cooler, often in the 45–55°F (7–13°C) range during summer stratification. By autumn the surface usually falls back to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C), and through winter the surface often reaches and remains at freezing (32°F / 0°C) with the water beneath ice near 32–39°F (0–4°C).
Swimming is commonly permitted during the open-water season where public access or beaches exist, and many people swim in summer when surface temperatures are pleasant. However, local conditions determine safety: water quality advisories for harmful algal blooms, posted restrictions, or hazardous shoreline/boat traffic can limit or prohibit swimming. Cold water layers and rapid temperature changes pose cold shock and hypothermia risks even in summer, and any winter activity requires certified ice safety checks. Checking current local advisories and signage before entering the water is recommended.
