** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Crane Lake in northern Minnesota experiences a wide seasonal swing in surface water temperature. In summer months (June–August) the top layer commonly warms to roughly 65–75°F (18–24°C), and on very warm, calm days it can reach the upper 70s°F (about 25–26°C). Late spring (May) and early fall (September) typically see cooler surfaces in the 45–65°F (7–18°C) range, with temperatures falling into the 40–50°F (4–10°C) band by late fall. Through the winter the lake is usually ice-covered and liquid water beneath or near the ice stays close to freezing, roughly 32–39°F (0–4°C). Deeper water remains near the coldest temperatures year-round, often around 39°F (4°C), because of stratification.
Swimming in Crane Lake is generally possible during the open-water season when surface temperatures are comfortable, and many resorts and public access sites accommodate swimmers. However, swimming is effectively prohibited or impractical when the lake is ice-covered in winter; the near-freezing water and ice make it unsafe except for experienced ice swimmers with proper precautions. Even in summer, swimmers should be mindful of cold-water shock from sudden temperature changes, boat traffic, variable depths, and the absence of lifeguards at many locations. Local signs and facility rules should be observed for safety.
