** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kabetogama Lake, located in northern Minnesota within the Kabetogama State Forest and adjacent to Voyageurs National Park, experiences pronounced seasonal swings in water temperature because of its northerly location and relatively shallow bays. In spring, surface temperatures are often cold, roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) as ice melts and runoff cools the water. By early summer temperatures commonly rise to about 55–65°F (13–18°C). The warmest period is mid to late summer, when surface readings typically reach 65–75°F (18–24°C) and can occasionally approach 78°F (26°C) in sheltered, shallow areas on very warm afternoons. In autumn the lake cools quickly, falling into the 32–50°F range (0–10°C) by late fall, and in winter the lake freezes over with water at or just above 32°F (0°C) beneath the ice.
Swimming in Kabetogama Lake is generally allowed during the ice-free months and is a common recreational activity, especially in July and August when surface temperatures are most comfortable. However, there are few lifeguarded beaches and conditions can change rapidly; cold-water shock and hypothermia are real risks outside the warmest periods or after prolonged exposure. Wind, cloud cover, depth, and inflow of cold water all affect temperature locally, so swimmers should choose sheltered shallow spots, limit time in the water when it is cool, and heed any local advisories or park guidance.
