** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Rice Lake, located northeast of Peterborough in Ontario, is a large, shallow lake known for its warm summer temperatures, which are heavily influenced by the region's continental climate. In the cold winter months, the lake freezes completely, with water temperatures near the freezing point, generally ranging from 0∘C to 5∘C (32∘F to 41∘F). Due to its relative shallowness, the lake warms up considerably in the peak summer season (July and August), with surface temperatures typically reaching a very comfortable range of 20∘C to 24∘C (68∘F to 75∘F), making it ideal for swimming.
Swimming is widely permitted and popular at various public access points and beaches along Rice Lake, such as Gores Landing Beach. The water is usually considered clean and great for swimming. However, it is crucial to note that many beaches on the lake are not routinely monitored for water quality by the local health unit, meaning all swimming is undertaken strictly at one's own risk. Furthermore, like many inland lakes, Rice Lake can be susceptible to Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) blooms in late summer, which can lead to advisories that strongly recommend avoiding all water contact due to potential toxins.
