** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Carters Lake in northwestern Georgia is a deep, clear reservoir whose surface temperatures vary noticeably with the seasons. In winter the lake typically cools to roughly 45–55°F (7–13°C). By spring the surface warms into the 50–68°F range (10–20°C) as air temperatures rise. Summer brings the warmest surface readings, often about 70–82°F (21–28°C) on sunny days, though occasional heat waves can push surface temperatures a few degrees higher. In autumn the surface cools again to around 55–70°F (13–21°C). Because Carters is unusually deep for the region, deeper water remains much colder year-round, and thermal stratification in summer can produce a sharp thermocline with bottom temperatures well below surface values.
Swimming opportunities are limited and different from lakes with dedicated beach areas. There are no official public swimming beaches or lifeguarded swim zones at Carters Lake, and the shoreline is largely steep and wooded, which creates sudden drop-offs and underwater hazards. For those who do enter the water, risks include cold deep water, strong currents near inlets or releases, and boat traffic; as a result the managing authorities discourage casual swimming and recommend exercise of caution. Visitors should check current on-site rules and use good judgment if they choose to swim.
