** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Apalachia Lake in North Carolina experiences the kind of seasonal temperature swings typical of upland reservoirs. In summer, surface waters often warm into the mid-60s to upper-70s °F (about 18–26 °C), with sheltered shallow bays occasionally reaching the low 80s °F (around 27–28 °C) on hot afternoons. During spring and fall the surface commonly ranges from roughly 50–65 °F (10–18 °C) as air temperatures moderate. In winter the lake can be quite cold, with surface temperatures frequently falling into the mid-30s to mid-40s °F (2–7 °C). These numbers are general; deeper water and outflow areas near dams or cold tributary inflows will be several degrees colder year-round.
Swimming is possible in warm months but whether it is formally allowed depends on local management and posted rules. Many reservoirs do not have lifeguarded, designated swimming beaches and are managed primarily for flood control, hydropower or fisheries, so authorities may discourage swimming because of sudden releases, steep drop-offs, submerged hazards and cold-water currents that can cause shock or hypothermia. If you plan to swim, choose designated areas if provided, be aware of seasonal temperature limits for comfort and safety, and check the managing agency’s guidance before entering the water.
