*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Chatuge Lake, a reservoir straddling the Georgia–North Carolina border, experiences clear seasonal swings in surface temperature. In summer months (June–August) surface temperatures commonly range from about 70–85°F (21–29°C), with peak afternoons sometimes reaching the upper end of that band. Spring (March–May) sees cooler water, roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) as the lake warms, while fall (September–November) generally drops from about 65°F to the 50s (18→10°C) as the season progresses. Winter surface readings often sit near freezing to the mid-40s, roughly 32–45°F (0–7°C), making the water distinctly cold and subject to rapid change with air temperatures and inflows.
Swimming at Chatuge Lake is commonly practiced from public parks, private beaches and marinas, but it’s not uniformly regulated across the shoreline. Recreational swimming is feasible and most comfortable during the warm summer window when water is in the 70s–80s°F (21–29°C); outside that period, cold water presents hypothermia risk and limits safe swimming. Certain spots—near the dam, boat channels, and some private properties—may prohibit swimming or be unsafe due to currents, boat traffic, or lack of lifeguards, so visitors should follow posted rules, use designated areas, and exercise caution.
