Location & Local Information
Caban Coch is the lowest and most accessible of the dams in the Elan Valley, giving way to a large reservoir that is vital for the water supply to Birmingham. As is the policy for all working reservoirs in the area, swimming is strictly forbidden due to serious dangers including hidden currents, submerged operational machinery, and the extreme cold. Water temperatures remain low year-round, typically ranging from 5∘C to 9∘C (41∘F to 48∘F) in winter, and only slowly rising to about 12∘C to 16∘C (54∘F to 61∘F) on the surface during the height of summer.
Despite the ban on entering the water, the dam itself and the surrounding area near the Elan Valley Visitor Centre are key tourist attractions. Visitors can appreciate the spectacular Victorian architecture of the dam, which often spills over like a natural waterfall after heavy rain. The area offers gentle walks and is the starting point for the scenic Elan Valley Trail, which is popular with cyclists and leads to the other impressive dams further up the valley. The nearby town of Rhayader also hosts the famous Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Centre.
