*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bone Lake in Minnesota experiences the same seasonal shifts in water temperature common to small northern lakes. In spring, as ice melts and runoff cools the surface, temperatures commonly range from about 40–60°F (4–15°C). By mid to late summer the surface often warms into a comfortable swimming band, roughly 68–78°F (20–26°C), though shallow bays can heat a few degrees higher on hot, calm days. Thermal stratification typically develops in summer, so deeper water remains noticeably colder than the surface. In fall the surface cools back toward 50–60°F (10–15°C) before turnover sets in. During winter the surface is at or below freezing when ice is present (32°F / 0°C), while water beneath the ice tends to remain near 39°F (4°C).
Swimming is generally possible at Bone Lake during the warmer months when surface temperatures reach the mid-60s°F (about 18°C) and above, and many local residents and visitors do swim there from public access points and private shorelines. Whether swimming is permitted at a particular spot depends on shoreline ownership, posted signs, and occasional health advisories: elevated bacterial counts or blue‑green algae blooms can prompt temporary closures. As with any inland lake, swimmers should heed local guidance, be aware that deeper water stays cold year‑round, and use common safety precautions because lifeguards and water‑quality conditions are not guaranteed.
