*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bankhead Lake, located on the Black Warrior River in central Alabama, experiences warm water temperatures for most of the year thanks to the region’s humid subtropical climate. In winter, surface temperatures typically range from 46 to 54°F (8–12°C), cool but seldom cold enough to discourage boating or fishing. By spring, the lake begins to warm steadily, reaching 60–70°F (16–21°C) by April and May. During the summer months, the surface water becomes quite warm, averaging 80–85°F (27–29°C) in July and August, which provides excellent conditions for swimming and other recreational activities. As autumn arrives, temperatures slowly decline to around 65–72°F (18–22°C), maintaining mild and comfortable conditions well into October.
Swimming is permitted in Bankhead Lake, and many visitors take advantage of its warm waters during late spring and summer. The lake’s extensive shoreline includes several public parks, beaches, and boat launches that offer easy access for swimmers. The calm sections of the lake, particularly near recreation areas away from the main river current, are best suited for safe swimming. Because the water is managed as part of a navigable river system, water levels and currents can vary slightly, so swimmers are advised to stay within designated zones and avoid areas with heavy boat traffic.
