*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lay Lake, situated along the Coosa River in central Alabama, is one of the state’s most accessible and popular recreational reservoirs. Its water temperature reflects Alabama’s warm, humid subtropical climate, offering a long swimming season. During winter, surface temperatures typically range from 46 to 54°F (8–12°C), remaining cool but ice-free. As spring progresses, the water warms steadily, reaching around 63–72°F (17–22°C) by late April and May. In midsummer, Lay Lake reaches its peak warmth, averaging 80–86°F (27–30°C) in July and August. As autumn arrives, the lake gradually cools to 65–72°F (18–22°C), keeping the water pleasant for outdoor activities well into October before returning to cooler winter values.
Swimming is allowed and popular throughout much of Lay Lake, particularly from late May through early October. The lake’s broad coves, gentle banks, and several public access areas make it ideal for family swimming and recreational use. The calm water and sandy or grassy shoreline provide comfortable entry points, while campgrounds and parks around Wilsonville and Shelby County offer designated swimming areas. Because Lay Lake is also used for boating and fishing, swimmers are encouraged to stay within marked zones and use caution near boat traffic. Overall, the lake’s warm temperatures and clean water create excellent conditions for summer swimming.
