Upper Bear Creek Reservoir, located in northwest Alabama near the towns of Haleyville and Bear Creek, is one of the cleanest and most scenic lakes in the region. Its water temperature changes noticeably through the year, following the area’s warm, humid subtropical climate. During winter, the surface temperature typically ranges from 45 to 52°F (7–11°C), remaining cool but not freezing. In spring, as air temperatures climb, the lake gradually warms to about 60–70°F (16–21°C) by May. During the summer months, Upper Bear Creek Reservoir reaches its warmest period, with surface waters averaging 80–85°F (27–29°C) in July and August. By autumn, the lake cools again to around 65–72°F (18–22°C), maintaining mild conditions for recreation well into October before dropping back toward winter values.
