Kragujevac, although landlocked, has two primary water bodies for recreation: Lake Šumarice and the nearby Lake Gruža (Gružansko jezero). Lake Šumarice, often called the Kragujevac Sea, is the most accessible local spot. Although annual water quality analyses often deem the water safe for swimming during the summer season, bathing officially remains at your own risk due to historical pollution concerns from wastewater, which has deterred many visitors.
Seasonal temperatures in these water bodies follow a clear pattern. In winter, from roughly December to March, the water temperature is cold, often dropping to between 0∘C and 6∘C, with ice formation possible. During the peak summer months, July and August, both shallow lakes warm up considerably. Surface temperatures typically range from 22∘C to 25∘C, providing comfortable conditions for swimming, particularly at the unorganized but popular coves of Lake Gruža, where swimming is commonly practiced.
