Lahti, located in the Päijät-Häme region of southern Finland, lies by the northern shore of Lake Vesijärvi, which connects to the larger Päijänne lake system. The city’s landscape is shaped by lakes, ridges, and forests, creating excellent opportunities for swimming and recreation. The water in Lake Vesijärvi and nearby small lakes is typically cool but clean. After the ice melts in late April, the surface temperature of the lakes is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it warms to about 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, the temperature often reaches 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). In shallow, sheltered bays, the water can briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, it cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lakes freeze again in November.
Swimming in Lahti’s lakes is allowed and widely enjoyed throughout the summer. The water quality is regularly monitored and considered suitable for bathing. Several public beaches, such as Myllysaari and Möysän ranta, offer safe and accessible swimming areas.
