❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 50°F (10°C) to 54°F (12°C). The water is slightly warmer, but still cool for most people. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Even experienced swimmers may feel discomfort if they stay in the water for too long. To improve comfort and safety, a wetsuit can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, located in the Uusimaa region, is surrounded not only by the sea but also by several inland lakes such as Longinoja, Vantaanjoki, and smaller recreational ponds and reservoirs. These inland water bodies have a more distinct seasonal temperature cycle than the nearby Baltic Sea. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface water temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, inland lakes in the Helsinki area typically reach 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). In shallower lakes and ponds, the temperature may briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and freezing generally occurs by late November.
Swimming in Helsinki’s inland lakes and rivers is allowed and well-organized, especially in maintained areas such as Vantaanjoki or Tuomarinkylä. Water quality is regularly monitored and generally suitable for bathing. The shallow and calm waters warm faster than the sea, making them pleasant for swimming in summer. While spring and autumn conditions are cold and best suited for experienced swimmers, mid-summer offers comfortable and refreshing temperatures for swimming and outdoor recreation across Helsinki’s natural inland settings.
