*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kotka, located in the Kymenlaakso region of southeastern Finland, lies at the mouth of the Kymijoki River, where freshwater meets the Gulf of Finland. The river’s water temperature changes with the seasons, influenced by both inland flows and the nearby sea. In spring, after the ice melts, the surface water in Kymijoki is usually around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F). During early summer, it rises to about 15–18 °C (59–64 °F), and in July, when the weather is warmest, the temperature typically reaches 18–22 °C (64–72 °F). Shallow sections of the river can occasionally warm to 23–24 °C (73–75 °F). As autumn arrives, the water cools quickly below 10 °C (50 °F), and during winter, upper parts of the river may freeze, while the lower parts near Kotka remain mostly ice-free.
Swimming in the Kymijoki River near Kotka is allowed but best enjoyed in designated and calm areas because of the strong currents in some sections. The water quality is generally good, and there are nearby beaches where people can safely swim during summer. The river and surrounding parks also attract visitors for boating and fishing. In July and August, the water is warm enough for comfortable swimming, offering a refreshing contrast to the sea breeze from the coast.
