The Põltsamaa River (Põltsamaa jõgi) in central Estonia typically shows pronounced seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter the river is often at or close to 0 °C (32 °F) and may be ice-covered for periods, while spring thaw pushes temperatures into the low single digits around 2–10 °C (35.6–50 °F) as runoff cools the water. In summer the surface temperature in slower, shallow stretches often rises to roughly 16–22 °C (60.8–71.6 °F) and on warm, still days can reach about 24 °C (75.2 °F) in isolated spots. During autumn the river cools again to roughly 8–14 °C (46.4–57.2 °F) as air temperatures drop and daylight shortens.
Swimming in the Põltsamaa is generally permitted and people do bathe in suitable places, but it is usually informal rather than in extensively monitored public beaches. Safety considerations shape where and when swimming is sensible: currents, variable depth, underwater vegetation and periodically elevated bacterial levels after heavy rain can make some locations unsuitable. Water in shaded or fast-flowing sections remains noticeably cooler than stagnant ponds, so even summer swims can feel brisk. In winter, ice and cold-water risks make swimming hazardous unless undertaken with proper ice-swimming precautions and experience.
