Pirita jõgi, a modest river running into Tallinn Bay, shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature. In spring (March–May) thaw and snowmelt typically keep the river cool, roughly 2–8 °C (36–46 °F). Summer temperatures (June–August) are milder in lower stretches and sheltered bends, commonly ranging from about 14–22 °C (57–72 °F), though shallow or slow-moving spots can warm a few degrees higher on hot days. Autumn (September–November) brings a steady decline to around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) as air temperatures fall, and in winter (December–February) the river is often at or near freezing—around 0–2 °C (32–36 °F)—with ice cover possible in cold years.
Swimming in the Pirita river is possible in many locations, especially in summer when temperatures are most comfortable, but it is not uniformly managed as an official large bathing area. Local conditions — water quality after heavy rain, currents, submerged obstacles and vegetation, and the presence or absence of lifeguards — affect safety, so swimmers should choose well-known spots and exercise caution. Some stretches closer to Tallinn’s recreational areas are used for informal bathing and water sports, while upstream or protected sections may be less suitable or restricted to protect nature.
