Yarrow Reservoir, on the West Pennine Moors near Chorley in Lancashire, is an upland drinking-water reservoir with consistently cool water. Surface temperatures vary by season: in summer the reservoir typically reaches about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F), occasionally touching 20 °C (68 °F) on warm days; in spring and autumn temperatures are commonly 6–12 °C (43–54 °F); and in winter the water usually falls to around 2–6 °C (36–43 °F). Cold, deep water and rapid weather changes mean even summer swimming can produce cold-shock responses.

Swimming in Yarrow Reservoir is generally discouraged and, in many places, formally prohibited because it is a working water supply and because submerged hazards, steep banks and changing currents create safety risks. Despite this, some experienced wild swimmers do enter in permitted nearby locations or during organised events, taking precautions. The area remains attractive for walkers and cyclists, with nearby features such as Rivington Pike, the Rivington Terraced Gardens and the moorland routes to Winter Hill offering scenic viewpoints and well-established trails for day visits.
