Upper Roddlesworth Reservoir, set within the West Pennine Moors of Lancashire, stays cold for most of the year. Surface temperatures typically range from about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) in winter, climb to roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) in spring and autumn, and reach their highest in summer at around 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) on warm, still days. Because it is a relatively small upland impoundment, deeper water and lack of thermal mixing mean conditions remain chilly even in summer and can feel much colder once you leave the sun-warmed surface.

Swimming in Upper Roddlesworth is generally discouraged and in many cases not permitted: the reservoir is part of a water supply system and there are official safety and water-quality reasons for restricting bathing.
