*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information

Belmont Reservoir on the West Pennine Moors tends to be cold for much of the year. Typical surface temperatures range from around 1–6 °C (34–43 °F) in winter, rising to roughly 4–12 °C (39–54 °F) in spring. In summer the shallowest, sun-warmed areas may reach 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) on warmer days, while autumn sees a gradual cooling back to about 8–14 °C (46–57 °F). These figures can vary with recent weather, wind and the reservoir’s depth, and the deeper water remains significantly colder than the surface.
Swimming in Belmont Reservoir is not officially permitted: the site functions as part of the local water supply and public safety authorities discourage bathing because of cold water shock, hidden currents and underwater hazards. Despite occasional wild swimmers, authorities advise against entering the water. The area is still popular for walking and birdwatching, with nearby attractions including Rivington Pike and its terraced gardens, the West Pennine Moors’ hiking routes, and views towards Winter Hill and Darwen Tower, all offering reasons to visit even without taking a dip.
