** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Greater Manchester
High Rid Reservoir sits in the Greater Manchester countryside and tends to be cold for much of the year. Typical surface temperatures range from about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F) in winter, through 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring, rising to roughly 14–20 °C (57–68 °F) in summer, and falling back to around 8–13 °C (46–55 °F) in autumn. In prolonged warm spells the water can approach the low 20s °C (low 70s °F) near the surface, but deeper water remains significantly cooler. Visibility and temperature stratification make conditions changeable even on the same day.
Swimming is not actively promoted at High Rid and there are restrictions and safety reasons for caution: the reservoir is managed for water supply and wildlife, there are no lifeguards, and cold water shock, submerged structures and variable currents pose hazards. Some experienced wild swimmers and organised groups do visit at their own risk, often following local guidance. The area is popular for walking and sightseeing too, with nearby attractions such as Rivington Pike, the terraced gardens and extensive trails over Winter Hill offering pleasant alternatives to open-water activity.
