** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Lancashire
Rake Brook Reservoir in Lancashire is a cool upland water body whose temperatures reflect the region’s maritime climate. Surface temperatures in winter commonly sit around 4–7°C (39–45°F), rising through spring to roughly 6–12°C (43–54°F). In summer the reservoir may reach about 12–18°C (54–64°F) on warm days, with autumn cooling back to 8–12°C (46–54°F). Deeper water remains markedly colder year-round, so even in summer the reservoir can feel much chillier than lakes in lowland areas.
Swimming at Rake Brook is generally discouraged and often prohibited because it forms part of the local water supply and presents safety risks. Cold-water shock, hidden underwater structures and steep, slippery banks make unsupervised bathing hazardous, and water company rules aim to protect drinking water quality. Visitors instead use the area for walking, birdwatching and enjoying views across the West Pennine Moors, with nearby towns in the Rossendale area offering cafes, trails and other reservoirs and moorland routes for outdoor recreation.
